The Importance of using Airflow Indicators

Did you know that only 18% of woodworking manufacturing sites surveyed had Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) airflow indicators installed (according to a recent HSE survey) and unfortunately this is something we are finding all too often !

Airflow indicators are an easy and cost-effective way to ensure that extraction systems are functioning effectively between annual LEV tests. With a straightforward green/red system, they provide reassurance that employees are protected from harmful contaminants.

According to HSG 258 guidelines, airflow indicators should be installed at each hood. We typically recommend simple, intrinsically safe indicators that operate using system pressure and do not require batteries. However, more advanced options are available, such as indicators with alarms for filter pressure drops or those used in recirculating LEV systems that return air to the workplace.

DevineAir offer on-site LEV system surveys and can review previous LEV reports to determine the most suitable indicators for your system. Once installed, these indicators clearly display safe and unsafe airflow ranges. We also provide LEV Awareness training and toolbox talks to help employees and area managers understand the controls and their limitations.
