The HSE has published a research report titled Wood Dust Exposures in Manufacturing Industries (RR1211, 2024), which is available for free download. You can access it using the provided link below.
RR1211: Wood dust exposures in manufacturing industries
The findings in this report closely align with the observations made by DevineAir; based on our experience, proactive clients typically schedule Thorough Examination and Testing (TEXT) of their Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems every 14 months. They also address any identified remedial actions within the specified timelines.
However, a common compliance issue arises with mobile systems, which are often overlooked and not included in the company’s LEV Asset Register. These mobile systems are usually compact vacuum cleaners that attach to handheld power tools such as orbital sanders and routers. While these vacuum cleaners are primarily used to remove surface dust and swarf, their connection to tools transforms them into systems managing airborne contaminants. Consequently, they fall under the scope of LEV testing.
LEV testing for these systems should involve qualitative dust lamp testing to evaluate the control levels achieved, as well as documentation of associated operator practices.
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for these smaller mobile units to remain unregistered, even when they are visibly present. In some cases, they are used alongside other tested LEVs (e.g., downdraught sanding benches) but are still overlooked by site operatives or LEV surveyors.
