The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 mandates the prevention or reduction of vibration-related risks at the workplace. Employers are responsible for protecting employees from HAVS and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Key steps include:
- Assessment: Identify employees using tools that pose a vibration risk, such as power tools and hand-guided equipment. Evaluate who might be at high risk.
- Control: Implement simple, cost-effective measures for low risks. For higher risks, prioritise protective actions and employ more robust controls.
- Prevention: Where feasible, eliminate or reduce vibration by using alternative processes.
- Training: Educate workers on vibration risks and proper use of controls, ensuring effective and proper usage.
- Maintenance: Regular maintenance can significantly reduce vibration levels. Repair or replace loose, worn, or inefficient tools.
- Monitoring: Periodically check the effectiveness of controls. While ongoing exposure monitoring is not legally required, it helps assess risk and usage patterns.
